In my lesson I will talk about my experiences with food allergies. After my introduction, I will define what food allergies are and share food allergy related facts. I will read the book The Princess and the Peanut Allergy by Wendy McClure and leave the rest of the books (pictured on the side) in the classroom. Each student can take turns taking the books home to read with their parents.

Next, I will play a game I created for the students. The game will involve showing the students a picture of a specific food and asking if someone is allergic to this food can they eat this item. For example I will say if you are allergic to peanuts can you eat peanut butter? I will use a whiteboard to display magnetic pictures of food and the students will come up and arrange the food into columns. The columns will be labeled, "Safe" or "Dangerous."

Then, I will talk to the students about how you can be a good friend to someone with a food allergy.
I will focus on these topics:

I will demonstrate how to use an auto-injector. I will use a trainer to show them the proper way to open it and how to inject it in the thigh.
To make sure the students understand the lesson I will roleplay with the students. I will give them a scenario and ask them what should they do. For example I would say a friend is coming over to your house who is allergic to peanuts. You just ate a peanut butter sandwich right before he came over. What should you do? I will hope the kids will say that you should wash your hands and brush your teeth.
I will train the teachers with an online seminar that I am working on with Judi Connor, BSN, RN from the Central Jersey Family Health Consortium.
